We’re excited to announce that James Hotaling, MD, MS, FECSM, a leading male fertility expert, has joined Carrot’s medical advisory board. Dr. Hotaling is a fellowship-trained urologist specializing in male infertility and men’s health. He has been published extensively in medical publications and peer-reviewed journals, in addition to serving as an editor of Fertility and Sterility, the premier journal in the field. Dr. Hotaling is funded by the NIH to study erectile dysfunction and male infertility and has been on the faculty at the University of Utah since 2013. He is currently the medical director of the fertility integrated practice unit, the director of the men’s health program, and runs a big data initiative for the University of Utah. Additionally, he’s the current president of the Society for the Study of Male Reproduction (SSMR) of the American Urological Association (AUA), the premier society in the field.

“Throughout my career, my work has centered on supporting patients to help them achieve their fertility and men’s health goals with the most cost-effective and data-driven means possible,” said Dr. Hotaling. “I’m excited to join Carrot and work with them to provide fertility healthcare benefits to people globally, including clinically-validated care to support hormonal health.”

Joining Carrot’s medical board, Dr. Hotaling will serve as an advisor for the company’s fertility healthcare benefits that support members experiencing low testosterone. He will report directly to Carrot Co-founder and Chief Medical Officer Asima Ahmad, MD, MPH.

“We’re excited to welcome Dr. Hotaling to our medical advisory board,” said Dr. Ahmad. “Dr. Hotaling’s extensive clinical experience in urology, including male fertility and low testosterone will be a major value add for our Carrot members globally.”

Approximately 40% of men age 45+ experience low testosterone. Studies show that men with low testosterone have higher rates of other comorbidities such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and hypertension.

Earlier this year, Carrot announced that its global customers will have the option to add comprehensive support for menopause and low testosterone as part of their fertility benefits package. For Carrot members, that means better access to providers through a specialized network, clinically supervised education, and intimate group support. Members can opt into a personalized Carrot Plan, receive telehealth access to specialized experts, participate in expert-led group sessions, access Carrot-vetted providers that support low testosterone and menopause, and receive additional resources.

Dr. Hotaling completed his undergraduate work at Dartmouth, graduating magna cum laude with a double major in history and biophysical chemistry. He then went to Duke for medical school, completed a 6-year residency at the University of Washington and then completed a fellowship in male infertility with Craig Niederberger, MD, at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He is a Fellow of European College of Sexual Medicine (FECSM) and has over 225 publications, multiple patents, and has founded several companies related to men’s health.
